Academic Glossary



 

A

Academic calendar

is a schedule of the didactic time frames that occur in an academic year; usually published on the web page once a year, usually published on the web page once a year.

Academic year

The period of instruction composed of the winter and summer semesters for the traditional semester academic calendar. The academic year begins at the 1st of October winter semester and ends after the last day of the summer semester.

Accomodation

PUM offers an access to affordable Dormitories, allowing the students get a safe place for a living.

Asklepios Program

Created out of collaboration with Asklepios Klinikum Uckermark GmbH. Asklepios Program offers seats for 6-year MD studies since 2013. This program is open only for German citizens.

 

B

Bursar’s Office

Office responsible for collecting and analyzing all student charges and fees, including tuition. Bursar’s Office is also responsible for areas including accounts payable, travel claims, invoicing and receipt of all payments.

 

C

Course in-progress

A grade indicating that a course is still in progress and will be completed at a later date.

Credit

A grade indicating only two options: “pass” and “not pass”/”credit” or “no credit”. Assessment is usually based on student’s presence and activity.

Curriculum

Describes the lessons and taught content. This term encompasses the assignments that students are given, a course’s learning objectives including published sources, apps; books; magazines; etc.

 

D

Dean

The title for an administrator, who leads a specific academic unit including departments within the university. The Dean is primarily a university officer who is the head of a particular faculty.

Dean’s Leave

A period of absence justified by the Dean.

Degree

Completing MD or DMD in PUM you get awarded with an academic degree: Master’s Degree (MA)

At the same time, you gain a professional title (not to be confused with an academic degree) of lekarz (MD) or lekarz-dentysta (DMD).

Department

An administrative unit at the university. The department may or may not offer an academic program, usually only specific subjects.


 

E

ECTS

Short for European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, which enables students from various countries in EU to attain credits and facilitates academic degree qualification.

English Program

PUM offers studies in English language since 1996 on the Faculty of Medicine and on the Faculty of Dentistry since 2006. This program is open for students from all around the world.

Erasmus + Program

A program allowing PUM students to study in seven different European countries: Spain, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Slovakia, Germany, Sweden and Italy.

Exemption

A student who completed a particular course during their previous education may apply for it in order to get a credit.

 

F

Final exam

A comprehensive and often cumulative assessment, which evaluates the student's understanding of the entire course material at the end of semester or year. It is usually a timed, written or oral examination. Final exam result is calculated to the average from the studies (GPA).

 

G

GPA

Refers to the working grade, which students receive at the end of each school year, which is a mean number taken by average out of a students’ grade in each course they take. GPA is cumulative - it takes into account every exam course grade a student accumulates throughout their studies.

Graded credit

A grade for the assessment usually based on test, checking the theoretical knowledge, or other individual performance.

Graduation

Completing studies, receiving a diploma and getting an MD / DMD title.

 

H

Holidays

Days off classes during the national holidays (according to the academic calendar).

 

L

Lekarz

The title awarded to graduates of long cycle intramural full-time MD Master’s Degree studies.

Lekarz-dentysta

The title awarded to graduates of long cycle intramural full-time DMD Master’s Degree studies.

Library

PUM’s Main Library offers a great access to full text and bibliographic databases at a global level. It offers a free access to learning platforms online educational apps; professional literature, etc.

 

M

Make-up class

A class you need to take to pick up what you have missed during your absence.

Medical Simulation Center (aka CSM)

A learning center which allows to recreate difficult medical cases and accidents in a realistic way for students’ practice.

MOODLE

E-learning platform. Course topics, whole course; PPPs; tests could be managed through this platform.


 

P

Phantom

Also known as Training Phantoms / Manikins. An equipment made for training various medical procedures.

Plan of studies

A list of courses for each year of study (obligatory to pass).

Practice Record Card

A document which you need to be filled in by the Department in which you complete your obligatory summer practicals.

Pre-courses

Courses you take before starting your studies. Their purpose is to refresh your knowledge on Physics, Chemistry and Biology. It is also to teach you some medical terminology in English.

Professor

Among the common ranks - one of the highest academic qualifications and positions at university. Professors are not only experts in their field, but also play an important role in teaching, research and academic self-administration.

Prolongation request

A request to the Dean you make if you cannot accomplish something on time – supported by a valid reason.

 

R

Re-take

An exam or class you need to take once again due to a failing grade.

Rector

The highest academic official at the university.

Rector’s Day

A day off studies established by the head of university.

Rules and Regulations

A document supported by a rector regarding the University Rules and Regulations as well as the student’s rights and duties.

 

S

Semester

A semester is made of 15 weeks of didactic period plus final exam weeks during the winter and the summer of each Academic Year.

Seminar

A small group (usually a few students) courses.

Summer practical training

A kind of internship - work experience related to the student's field of study, often during the summer. It is obligatory for academic credit.

Syllabus

An outline of a course provided by the didactic responsible on the subject. It includes an overall summary of the topics to be covered and learning outcomes.

Szczecin

A a city in Poland. Szczecin is located in the north-west part of Poland, very close to German border and easy travel access to other countries. There are many student-friendly areas and cozy places such as parks, cafes, museums, restaurants, clubs and bars.

 

T

Timetable

Usually published on the web page a schedule of all the courses within given semester or year. Timetables at semester system based on weekly schedule. Timetables at bock system refers to clinical years of studies.

Transcript of records

A certificate with all your grades and credits obtained during the studies.

Transfer

Changing your university while keeping a status of a student.

Tuition

Associated charges or fees for learning and refers to the cost required to attend the university. Tuition usually applies to one academic year —generally from October till July.

 

V

VDO

Short for Virtual Dean’s Office – used by the university electronic system for students data; students assessment; LMS; MOODLE.

Vice Rector for Didactics

A person who is responsible for the didactic issues at the university, including plans of studies, managing quality standards at the university, scheduling the timetables, as well as signing the contract with the student.

 

Y

Year repetition

Allowed upon the Dean’s positive decision enabling the Student to retake the failed exam / up to a few course subjects.
