Rare Diseases Day 2025
Scientific Conference "Understanding Rare Diseases" - 28.02.2025
Dear Students,
On behalf of Professor Leszek Domański, MD, PhD, Rector of PUM, and Professor Maria Giżewska, MD, PhD, from the Department of Paediatrics, Endocrinology, Diabetology, Metabolic Diseases and Developmental Cardiology at PUM, we warmly invite you to join us on 28 February 2025 in celebrating Rare Disease Day.
On this occasion, a scientific conference titled “Understanding Rare Diseases” will be held from 01:00 pm to 05:30 pm in the University Auditorium at Rybacka 1.
During the conference, distinguished speakers from outside PUM, as well as experts from our University, will present the most intriguing aspects of diagnosing and treating this unique group of disorders. We will explore the challenges of rare diseases and the latest treatment methods from the perspectives of paediatrics, genetics, paediatric neurology, paediatric hand surgery and adult hepatology.
We are also honoured to welcome patients, many of whom have been treated in our university clinics for years, whose extraordinary stories will be shared by young academic staff and students.
The conference is aimed at doctors, both Polish- and English-speaking students from all faculties (simultaneous translation will be provided), healthcare professionals, and individuals responsible for the organisation of healthcare in our region.
We hope that the programme we have prepared will spark your interest and expand your knowledge of diseases which, despite being classified as rare, affect millions of people worldwide.
We encourage you to register now and look forward to your presence and active participation.

OPEN LECTURE OCTOBER 29, 2024
We cordially invite you to the exceptional series of scientific lectures addressed to medical community, scholars, entrepreneurs, and members of the society. This initiative is aimed at disseminating medical knowledge, as well as promoting healthy lifestyle and disease prevention. Throughout the series, we will host internationally renowned lecturers, who will present the latest achievements in their fields of research.
The first lecture, “From myelin degeneration to regeneration: Lessons learned from animal models of multiple sclerosis,” will be held by Univ. Prof. Dr. med. Dr. rer. nat. Markus Kipp from Universitätsmedizin Rostock (Medical University of Rostock).
Professor Kipp's research team conducts advanced research on the physiology and pathology of the so-called axon-oligodendrocyte-myelin unit. The main focus of the research is to understand how stressed oligodendrocytes regulate the recruitment of peripheral immune cells, and how these cells gain access to the parenchyma of the central nervous system (CNS) through specific neuroanatomical pathways. For this purpose, the team uses advanced research techniques such as design stereology, behavioural analyses (including high-speed abdominal plane videography), or a combination of positron emission and computed tomography (PET/CT). When possible, the results of preclinical studies are compared with post-mortem samples collected from donors diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
The lecture will take place on October 29, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. in the Main Aula of the Pomeranian Medical University’s Rectorate building (ul. Rybacka 1 in Szczecin).
This is a unique opportunity to listen to one of the world’s leading experts in the field of neurology and regeneration of the nervous system. Everybody interested in topics related to medicine, especially scientists, students, and persons involved in the communication and promotion of health-related knowledge, is welcome to join us.
Don't miss this unique opportunity to experience science at its best!

Dear Students,
We have been informed about a worrying situation, where students with an active COVID-19 infection came to one of our clinics to attend clinical classes, and thus, inadvertently put the safety of hospital patients (including severely sick, immunocompromised patients!) at grave risk.
You are here because you want to be good physicians one day. We understand that you want to complete all the tasks prescribed for this academic year in a dutiful, diligent and timely manner, because of the goal you have set for yourselves, but also out of respect to us, your teachers.
Please, remember: your first and utmost duty is to act for the best benefit of the patients, and not to bring them harm.
DO NOT COME TO CLINICAL CLASSES WHEN ACTIVELY SICK WITH ANY INFECTIOUS DISEASE!
This is what to do in case you develop symptoms of an infection:
- Get a consultation ASAP, in either of these outpatient clinics:
- Szczecińskie Centrum Zdrowia, al. Wojska Polskiego 91;
phone numbers: +48 91 8854820; +48 571 263 745 - Szczecińskie Centrum Zdrowia, ul Bohaterów Warszawy 51;
phone numbers: +48 91 8854810; +48 501 749 768
- Szczecińskie Centrum Zdrowia, al. Wojska Polskiego 91;
REMEMBER TO HAVE YOUR EUROPEAN HEALTH INSURANCE CARD! This is the only requirement to get access to help you need.
IMPORTANT: We have no longer a contract with the outpatient clinic at Rybacka – do NOT go there for consultation.
- Provided the diagnosis is confirmed, ask for a medical leave
- INFORM THE HEAD OF THE CLINICAL DEPT., as soon as possible, to make arrangements re. the making up for your absence. Teachers will do their best to find a slot for you as suitable as possible for both parts, in recognition of your placing the patients’ safety above your convenience.
In case of any questions, about the above protocol, please contact your Group Representative and ask them to reach out to us – we will do my best to help you practice.
On behalf of the Patients as well as all your clinical teachers, THANK YOU!

On 1st October, the term of Professor Leszek Domański as the Rector of the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin was commenced, as were the terms of the University’s new authorities: https://www.pum.edu.pl/uniwersytet/uczelnia/wladze_uczelni
Starting from 1st October, a number of institutional changes went into force at PUM. One of them is the establishment of the Interfaculty Center for Education in English Language (Międzywydziałowe Centrum Kształcenia w Języku Angielskim). The Center has its own Dean, Assoc. Prof. Aleksandra Wilk, MSc, PhD, and two Vice-Deans: Assoc. Prof. Aleksandra Gawlikowska-Sroka, MD, PhD, Prof. PUM, and Joanna Nieznanowska, MD, PhD, who are in charge of matters related to the English Program students at both majors.
Previous Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry is now divided into two separate faculties: Wydział Medycyny (Faculty of Medicine), and Wydział Stomatologii (Faculty of Dentistry).
These changes do not affect our current students.
Welcome to the 76th academic year at PUM in Szczecin!
